Solarolo

Solarolo, just like the nearby Castel Bolognese, is located in that fortunate land between hills and plain where they enjoy the positive aspects of both environments: serenity and opulence, quiet living and quality of life.
Via Emilia, which crosses the former and flanks the latter, plus the location between Faenza and Imola, ensured an appropriate but not excessive vivacity, while history and culture have acted on these small towns with a constant presence, certainly far more than their size would lead to believe. The vicissitudes of Castel Bolognese and Solarolo were therefore indissolubly linked on a historical, political, civic and economic level.
Solarolo was first mentioned in 993, and thenceforth Castrum Solaroli would throughout its history be at the centre of disputes and sudden changes of hands. Governed by the Manfredi family, lords of Faenza up until 1501, it was then occupied by “Valentino” and then by the Republic of Venice, up until its concession to the Gonzaga of Mantova and finally to the Papal State.
The centre of Solarolo, pacifically surrounded by the fertile plain, shows the traces of different epochs: archaeological remains, stretches of the mediaeval walls and simple, fascinating 19th century dwellings.
The popular spirit of these places finds fullest expression in two festivals which have always competed with regard to which event is the oldest and greatest: the Festival of the Ascension in Solarolo and the Pentecost Festival in Castelbolognese. Events at which you can experience the most typical of Romagna music and foods, not to mention the increasingly rare sense of plain and simple fun.
The countryside is a stone’s throw away, and the gardens of the houses continue in the orchards, the vineyards and the fields. It is precisely on the imaginary border between the two places that the Scodellino Mill stands. Built in a far off time it induces us to think that there is still a master miller at work inside.
