Riolo
Terme is in the Senio Valley, in the lee of the Chalk Vein, where
the valley opens into a bowl surrounded by gentle ridges and fertile
hills, in the centre of a territory particularly rich for its number
and variety of curative waters. The village of Riolo was founded
in the early middle ages. Due to its military importance it was
fortified at the end of the 14th century with the castle and fortress
which were modified about a century later to make them more secure.
These important bastions, stormed in 1500 by Caesar Borgia, the
Valentin who inspired Machiavelli, are splendid examples of Renaissance
military architecture. The main attractions of Riolo Terme lie
in its historical, environmental and wine-food riches, but above
all in the precious spa waters, already well known in Roman times.
As a result, in 1914 it took the name Riolo Bagni (Riolo Baths)
and its present name (Riolo Spa) in 1957. The medicinal effects
of these waters have been used since 1870 for curative and beauty
purposes, following the building of the Spa Centre amid the green
of twelve hectares of grounds. In its long life it has played host
to personages such as Artusi, Carducci, Oriani, Lord Byron, Murat
and the Bonaparte princes.
Today the Riolo Spa Centre, against a background that brings to
mind the Belle Époque, offers cures – especially for
respiratory disturbances – and beauty and rehabilitation
treatments, coupling modern spa technologies and ancient traditions
of oriental and occidental medicine, with the aid of waters, medicinal
herbs, essential oils and very fine clays.
More recent but nonetheless perfectly set in the spirit of the
place is the Riolo Golf & Country Club. Conceived to integrate
many of the morphological features of the area, the course is magically
inserted into the balance of the landscape, its 18 holes winding
by way of cultivated fields, old farmhouses, rows of vines and
barren erosion furrows.
For more than a century Riolo has been the place to choose (in
virtue of its waters, its environment and the serenity it communicates)
for a stay in the name of well-being. A place which at the same
time has maintained unaltered a human dimension and an identity
jealously guarded by the love of its inhabitants, an identity gathered
around the bastions of the Rocca and the earthworks of the walls.
