Where
Via Emilia crosses the valleys of the Lamone and the Senio marks
the beginning of the Road of Sangiovese and the Flavours of the
Faenza Hills: a circuit of the delights of Romagna peasant life
that winds along the Faenza Apennine to the boundary with Tuscany.
Orchards, vineyards and olive groves accompany the traveller’s
eye, while his palate can enjoy the multiple flavours of a rich
food basket. The wines have won authoritative recognition: Albana,
the first Italian white wine to boast DOCG, increasingly appreciated
in the Raisin Wine version; the DOC whites Trebbiano and Pagadebit,
the DOC reds Sangiovese and Cagnina, right down to the typical
DOC reds and whites of the Colli di Faenza.
This land offers excellent specialities: the Romagna Shallot (IGP
since 1997), the prized extra-virgin olive oil of Brisighella DOP
(since 1996) in the two types “Brisighello” and “Brisighella”,
to which are added the crus “Nobil Drupa” and “Orfanello”,
cow’s milk cheeses such as squaquerone and raviggiolo, and
sheep’s and goat’s milk cheeses such as pecorino and
caprino, also aromatised with medicinal herbs. Some of these slopes
provide grazing for Razza Romagnola cattle, whose meat is excellent,
and for the Mora Romagnola, a rare breed of pig that supplies top
quality charcuterie.
At the boundary with the plain, Romagna Peaches and Nectarines
are grown (both IGP) as well as kiwis and apricots. In the Apennine
woodlands marrons, medlars and cornelian cherries grow. In honour
of these and other aromas of long ago, such as volpina pears, sorb
apples and jujubes, in autumn Casola Valsenio organises the Festival
of Forgotten Fruit and Brisighella devotes four Sundays to typical
valley products: young pig, volpina pears, truffles and extra-virgin
olive oil. The towns and villages of the “Terre di Faenza” offer
many other occasions to step into a microcosm of the senses, varied
and ancient: in Brisighella the Chest of Flavours, with tasting
of traditional foods; in Casola Valsenio at the Medicinal Herb
Street Market, you can see and buy medicinal plants and herbal
products. And every spring, for the Green Dish gastronomic event,
restaurateurs offer thematic menus featuring the use of aromatic
plants. The circle closes with the Faenza trade fair: Enology and
the Typical Product Show presents the best wine and food from the “Terre
di Faenza” and the whole of Romagna.
