Aware
of its role as world capital of artistic pottery Faenza includes
many symbols of its position.
The International Ceramics Museum (MIC), founded in 1908 by Gaetano
Ballardini, is the starting point for an ideal tour of the town.
Its 10.000 square metres of exhibition space contain a collection
unique in the world for breadth of epochs, typologies of form and
decoration, and geographical origins. Ideally complementary to
the MIC, the Carlo Zauli Museum, a magical transformation of the
contemporary master and sculptor’s workshop after his death,
has maintained intact the intimist dimension of the craftsman’s
studio.
The same atmosphere that you breathe in more than 60 ceramics workshops
spread around the town, where craftspeople and artists produce
DOC quality certificated ceramics in forms and decorations that
range from reproductions to artistic experimentation.
In spring the town shows its finest colours with a packed programme
of events: at the MIC there are international exhibitions and,
every other year, the international Competition “Premio Faenza”.
The best of Faenza production can be seen at the market exhibition
Ceramic Summer Planet Faïence in Palazzo delle Esposizioni
and every year in Piazza Nenni there is the Pot Thrower’s
World Championship in which the best potters from all over the
world take up a challenge – in the categories “aesthete” and “technician” – to
make the widest plate or the tallest vase.
The international aspect of the town is also perceptible in the
numerous foreign students who attend courses at the Istituto Statale
d’Arte per
la Ceramica. Courses for tourists wishing to develop integration
between knowing and producing pottery are held in the workshops
of the MIC Giocare con l’arte, in the Vocational Training
Centre and in craftsmen’s workshops.
But to discover the relationship between Faenza and the art of
pottery you don’t have to go to a museum or exhibition. You
need only stroll around the ancient streets of the centre in random
search of traces and testimony to contemplate the signs of a golden
age which continues to this day.
